The Ekaru Technology Advisor Vol 6-3 March 2006 Welcome to this month's issue! The Technology Advisor's mission is to provide quick technology tips and trends to help you manage and grow your business!
A word of caution regarding Norton Internet Security 2006: We have seen problems with accessing certain sites on the internet which require password authentication, and problems with the way a workstation publishes and receives information from shares on the network. We have also seen incomplete un-installs of Norton Internet Security. Before you invest in the solution which will "protect everything", think through the potential conflicts, and also keep in mind that there will likely be considerable extra work beyond a simple installation to properly configure products to operate together. One potential approach is to keep it simple and run separate solutions for the various types of threats. Also keep in mind that security threats are also extending to Instant Messaging and handheld devices. We are currently evaluating several security products, so stay tuned to future newsletters for more feedback.
July 11, 2006: Say good-bye to Win 98 Microsoft has posted a web page to review system requirements, eligibility, and compatibility of upgrading your current hardware and software.

Announcement Technology Tip:
Use Strong Passwords
The general rule of thumb is to have a password over eight characters in length which combines letters, numbers and symbols. It should not contain words in the dictionary or sequential numbers or letters on a keyboard. Also, use a DIFFERENT strong password for each or your accounts.
Are your passwords "strong"? Microsoft has a handy Password Checker on web - type in a password and get it rated:

Another thing to remember: Don't "cache" your passwords - sure, its convenient, but if your computer is ever lost or stolen, ANYONE can access your critical information.
