Technology New Years Resolutions for 2008

1. Backup your data often! - How much data can you afford to lose? A day's worth? 15 minutes? Time your backup to support your needs.
2. Verify your backup - are you really backing up what you need? Check it!
3. New backup technologies - If you're still using tape backup, look at some alternatives.
4. Archive your email - if your email ".pst" file gets too big, Outlook will slow down, and eventually it may fail to run - keep your email cleaned up on a regular basis.
5. Use strong passwords - passwords should be eight characters long including upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, keyboard symbols (!, @, etc). Never use a dictionary word.
6. Defragment your hard drive - even if you delete files, eventually your performance will suffer if your hard drive isn't cleaned up.
7. Consider beefing up your firewall. If you are using a "SOHO" class router for your business, you may want to consider more protection.
8. Keep your AntiVirus protection and Antispyware protection up to date - ALWAYS!
9. Wireless security - we still find open networks - make sure yours isn't one of them!
10. Battery Backup for critical workstations and network gear - Invest in a decent uninterruptible power supply to protect your critical systems against power spikes and short outages.
